Choosing the Right Ceramic Coating Package

Choosing a ceramic coating package comes down to more than selecting the longest available duration. The right option depends on how long you plan to keep your vehicle, how you maintain it and how much value you place on easier cleaning over the years ahead.

At It’s aWrap™, we offer 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year ceramic coating options. Each provides a different ownership horizon, but a longer package is not automatically the right choice for every driver. Someone planning to sell their vehicle soon may have different priorities from an owner who intends to keep it for the foreseeable future.

One important consideration is the cost of upgrading later. Some customers initially choose a 1-year package, experience the benefits of ceramic coating and return to purchase a 3- or 5-year option. Depending on the packages selected, this can cost more overall than choosing a longer duration from the beginning. If you expect to keep your vehicle for several years, it is worth considering a 3- to 5-year package from the outset.

Choosing the right ceramic coating package starts with the vehicle’s condition, ownership plans and maintenance habits.

Comparing 1-, 3-, 5- and 7-year ceramic coating packages

The year attached to a ceramic coating package gives you a starting point for comparing the available options. Rather than treating the number as a measure of coating hardness or scratch resistance, consider how long you want the protection and associated warranty coverage to fit into your ownership plans.

Package duration Best suited to What to consider
1 year Drivers with a shorter ownership horizon or those trying ceramic coating for the first time. If you decide to upgrade later, purchasing another package may cost more than choosing a longer duration initially.
3 years Owners who expect to keep their vehicle for the next few years. A practical middle ground for drivers looking for longer-term benefits without committing to the longest option.
5 years Drivers planning to keep their vehicle for several years and wanting to maintain easier cleaning over a longer period. Worth considering if you want to avoid starting with a shorter package and upgrading later.
7 years Long-term owners who intend to keep their vehicle for an extended period. Consider the full ownership commitment, including the annual maintenance required to maintain warranty coverage.

These durations are a useful starting point, but the package name alone does not tell you everything about the coating. Before choosing, understand the product being applied, the preparation involved, the surfaces covered and the conditions attached to its warranty.

Consider how you use and wash your vehicle

Your washing habits can make a difference when deciding how much value you will get from ceramic coating. Some owners regularly wash their vehicles and enjoy keeping the paint looking its best. Others wash less frequently and want the cleaning process to be as straightforward as possible when they do get around to it.

Ceramic coating can make routine cleaning easier by helping contaminants release more readily from the treated surface. For someone who wants that benefit throughout several years of ownership, a longer-duration package may make more sense. It provides a longer period in which to benefit from the easier-cleaning properties of the coating, provided the vehicle receives the required care.

However, ceramic coating is not a substitute for washing. Dirt, road film and other contaminants still need to be removed. Leaving them on the paint for extended periods can affect the vehicle’s appearance and the coating’s performance. Regular, appropriate washing remains part of looking after a coated vehicle.

If you are unsure how to care for the finish after installation, our ceramic coating maintenance and washing guide explains the best practices for keeping the surface clean.

Look beyond the number of years

Two ceramic coating packages should not be compared by duration alone. The preparation and application process matter, as does understanding exactly what the package covers.

Start by asking which ceramic coating product is being applied and what its stated duration and warranty conditions are. You should also understand which vehicle surfaces are included. A package covering painted exterior panels may not automatically include glass, wheels, trim or other surfaces. Confirming the coverage beforehand helps avoid assumptions about what is protected.

Paint preparation is another important part of the process. Ceramic coating is applied over the vehicle’s existing finish, so the condition of that finish affects the result. Swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation and other imperfections may remain visible beneath the coating if they are not addressed beforehand.

Paint correction may be recommended when the condition of the vehicle calls for it, but it is not automatically necessary for every new vehicle. The appropriate preparation depends on the paint’s actual condition. Learn more about paint correction before ceramic coating and why assessing the finish first is important.

Understand the annual maintenance commitment

One detail customers should factor into their decision is the annual top-layer boost. This service is required to maintain ceramic coating warranty coverage. Customers must return annually for the boost as part of the warranty maintenance requirements.

The annual top-layer boost is a separate paid service, not an included annual service at no additional cost. It typically ranges from $150 to $250, depending on the vehicle. This recurring expense should be considered when comparing the overall cost of a 3-, 5- or 7-year package.

In other words, the package price is not the only cost to consider. You should also account for the annual boost throughout the period you intend to maintain warranty coverage. If you are comparing packages, ask about the maintenance schedule and warranty requirements before making your decision.

It is also important to understand what ceramic coating does not prevent. Its hydrophobic properties help water bead and move across the surface, but that does not mean water cannot remain on the paint. Droplets can still collect in certain areas, dry and leave mineral deposits or water marks.

Ceramic coating can make cleaning easier, but it does not make paint immune to water spots. For a closer look at why this happens and how to manage it, read our guide to ceramic coating and water spots.

For most customers who plan to keep their vehicle for several years, Khaled generally recommends considering at least a 3- to 5-year package. A 1-year option can make sense for a shorter ownership period or someone trying ceramic coating for the first time. However, if you already know you intend to keep the vehicle long term, choosing a longer package initially may be the more practical decision.

The best choice ultimately comes down to your vehicle, ownership plans and willingness to follow the required maintenance schedule. If you would like help comparing the available options, visit our ceramic coating service page or speak with our team at It’s aWrap™.
