Here’s what Ontario drivers should consider before choosing their window tint percentage.

What Does Window Tint Percentage Actually Mean?
Window tint percentages refer to Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—the amount of visible light that passes through the glass and film.
The lower the VLT percentage, the darker the window appears.
For example:
- 50% VLT allows approximately 50% of visible light through and creates a relatively light appearance.
- 35% VLT creates a noticeable tint while maintaining relatively strong visibility.
- 20% VLT provides a considerably darker appearance and greater privacy.
- 5% VLT, commonly called limo tint, is extremely dark.
There is another important detail: the film percentage isn’t necessarily the final VLT of the window.
Automotive glass may already have some level of factory tint or light reduction. Once aftermarket film is installed over that glass, the combined VLT can be lower than the percentage printed on the film.
That’s one reason professional installers consider the existing glass rather than choosing film based entirely on a number.
Ontario Window Tint Laws: What Drivers Should Know
Ontario’s tint laws are more nuanced than many online guides suggest.
Under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act, a vehicle cannot have material on the windshield or the windows directly beside the driver that obstructs the driver’s view. The Act also prohibits coloured or reflective material on the windshield or windows immediately beside the driver when it substantially obscures the vehicle’s interior from outside.
Ontario vehicle inspection requirements also contain light-transmission standards that may apply depending on the vehicle and its model year.
Because of these requirements, extremely dark tint on the front driver and passenger windows can create both visibility and compliance concerns.
Rear passenger and rear windows generally provide considerably more flexibility, provided the vehicle maintains the required rearward visibility through appropriate mirrors.

What Window Tint Percentage Should You Choose?
There isn’t one percentage that’s best for every vehicle. These are some of the most common shade ranges and what you should expect from them.
50% — Light and Subtle
A 50% film provides a relatively subtle appearance.
It can make sense for drivers who:
- Prefer a lighter, less noticeable tint
- Prioritize nighttime visibility
- Want the performance benefits of premium film without dramatically darkening the glass
This is also a good example of why shade and film performance should be considered separately. A high-performance nano ceramic film does not need to be extremely dark to provide meaningful solar-energy rejection.
35% — A Popular Balanced Appearance
35% is a popular choice because it provides a noticeable tinted appearance without becoming extremely dark.
Drivers often like it because it offers:
- A clean, understated appearance
- Good daytime visibility
- More privacy than lighter shades
- A good balance for drivers who also drive frequently at night
However, choosing a shade for the front windows requires consideration of Ontario’s visibility requirements and the vehicle’s existing glass. A film being commonly installed does not automatically mean it will be appropriate for every front-window application.
20% — Darker Appearance and Greater Privacy
20% creates a considerably darker appearance and is popular with drivers looking for increased privacy.
It works particularly well on:
- Rear passenger windows
- Rear glass
- SUVs and trucks
- Vehicles where the owner wants to complement darker factory privacy glass
Visibility at night is reduced compared with lighter films, so this should be considered before choosing darker shades.
5% — Maximum Privacy
5% film is extremely dark and allows very little visible light through the glass.
It provides:
- Very high privacy
- A dramatic appearance
- Significant glare reduction
The trade-off is substantially reduced visibility, particularly at night. It is generally better suited to appropriate rear-window applications rather than windows beside the driver.
Does Darker Window Tint Reject More Heat?
Not necessarily—and this is one of the biggest misconceptions we hear from customers.
Tint darkness and heat rejection are not the same thing.
A dark entry-level film can look significantly darker while rejecting less solar energy than a much lighter high-performance film.
Film construction is what determines much of its thermal performance.

This means a driver primarily concerned with summer heat may be better served by choosing a lighter nano ceramic film instead of simply selecting the darkest film available.

Don’t Forget About Factory Privacy Glass
SUV and truck owners should pay particular attention to this.
Many SUVs, crossovers and trucks come from the factory with darker rear privacy glass. That glass may look similar to aftermarket tint, but appearance and solar performance are not necessarily the same thing.
Customers sometimes tint only the front windows to visually match the rear glass. Others apply premium film to the rear windows as well to improve solar performance throughout the cabin.
The best approach depends on whether your priority is:
- Matching the appearance of the front and rear windows
- Improving heat rejection throughout the vehicle
- Increasing privacy
- Maximizing UV protection
What About Windshield Tint?
Windshield tint requires additional consideration because unrestricted forward visibility is critical.
Some drivers are interested in very light, high-performance films primarily for heat and UV management rather than creating a visibly dark windshield.
However, windshield applications must be considered carefully in relation to Ontario requirements and driver visibility. We recommend discussing the vehicle, desired film and intended coverage with an experienced installer rather than treating the windshield like another side window.
Think About Night Driving Before Going Dark
A shade that looks perfect during a sunny afternoon can feel very different on an unlit road at night.
Before selecting 20%, 15% or 5% film, consider how often you:
- Drive at night
- Use poorly illuminated residential roads
- Reverse into dark driveways or parking spaces
- Drive during rain or snow
Ontario winters make this particularly relevant. Darkness arrives early, and snow, rain and poor weather can already reduce visibility.
Going darker isn’t always going better.

Final Thoughts: How Dark Should You Tint Your Windows?
The best window tint percentage in Ontario isn’t automatically the darkest option.
For most drivers, the better approach is to balance appearance, privacy, nighttime visibility, film performance and Ontario’s requirements.
If heat rejection is your main priority, choosing a higher-performance film can make a much bigger difference than simply choosing a darker shade. If privacy is the priority, darker rear windows may make sense. And if you spend a lot of time driving at night, a lighter shade may be the better long-term choice.
